Visioning Human Rights in the New Millennium - update

Greetings All,

Here's my contribution to the exhibit "Visioning Human Rights in the New Millennium" and I just got my copy of the catalog by the same name written by Dr. Carolyn L. Mazloomi.   My piece was created with commercial cotton, photo transfers, and fiberglass window screen.  This piece measures 50 by 50 and was machine pieced and machine quilted.  I am so very grateful to be included.

Freedom Summer 55

Freedom Summer, also known as the Mississippi Summer Project, was a 1964 voter registration drive sponsored by several civil rights organizations. Aimed at increasing black voter registration in Mississippi, the Freedom Summer workers included black Mississippians and hundreds of out-of-state, volunteers. Two one-week orientation sessions for the volunteers were held during the summer of 1964 in Oxford, Ohio, on the campus of then-Western College for Women (now part of Miami University). In addition to African-American Mississippians, more than 1,000 out-of-state, and mostly white, volunteers were constantly harassed and abused by the state’s white population. The Ku Klux Klan, as well as police, state and local officials, were behind many of the violent attacks, including arson, assaults, false arrest and the murder of three Civil Rights activists — Michael Schwerner, 24, James Chaney, 21, and Andrew Goodman, 20.

I am honored to present an exhibition, We Who Believe In Freedom: Narratives of Survival and Victory, in honor of the 55th anniversary of Freedom Summer. Please join me for the opening reception on April 5th at 6:00PM at the National Freedom Center Museum located at 50 East Freedom Way, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Coming February 28, 2019, hot off the presses "Visioning Human Rights in the New Millennium: Quilting the World’s Conscience" by Dr. Carolyn L.  Mazloomi.

A powerful way to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Human Rights Declaration, this book reminds us of its impact and each of its 30 principles, using intriguing art quilts. Sometimes taking us by surprise, the 75 textile artists visualize the global struggle for human rights with their interpretations of the Declaration, ratified in 1948, which represents the first global expression of rights to which all human beings are innately entitled. The 91 works’ themes include the first recorded initiation of human rights in Persia in 539 BCE, the plight of child soldiers and child brides, unlawful incarceration, the right to privacy, fair labor practices, torture, and the right of all world citizens to food, education, shelter, and healthcare. Together with the text of each Rights Declaration article, a message from the artist explains each quilt’s inspiration and meaning.  #WCQN  #FiberArtistTrishWilliams

And Still We Rise - update

ASWR opens September  1 – October 14, 2018, at Two Concurrent Locations: Mariposa Museum & World Culture Center in Peterborough, NH and Canaan Street Meetinghouse in Canaan, NH.  Women Of Color Quilters Network is still on the move.  The more things change, the more some things stay the same lest we forget.  

P.I.E.C.E.S. an exhibition

My next solo exhibit will be at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, IL.  Aug 20 - Sept 14, 2018.  Gallery talk Aug 29th from  Noon to 1p.m.  This piece "Birch Trees Again" was created with my hand dyed and painted fabrics as well as some gifted fabrics. This piece is machine pieced and machine quilted with raw-edge appliques.  Birch trees are a recurring theme in my work and trees are a mainstay.  I am forever grateful for all opportunities large and small to exhibit and a special thanks to Jessica Ott.

Art Of The Passion - exhibit.

My latest piece was created for the exhibit "The Art Of The Passion" for the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Frankfort, IN.  I created a piece that honors the 6th Station of the Cross.  

Station 6: Comfort – A stranger courageously offers comfort to Jesus.
Veronica was so moved by the sight of Jesus’ suffering that she courageously moved out of the crowd to wipe the blood and sweat from His face with a towel. She was rewarded when the image of His face was transferred to the towel.
It is a suffering face, disfigured with wounds, yet it is the only image of Himself that Jesus chose to leave with us.
We can bring healing to the scars that hide the beauty of His grace from the world. We can continue to build upon faith and the visible signs of love and compassion.  (Matthew 25:40)

My piece is simple in its construction because I wanted to mainly focus on the message of comfort and I do hope that I have conveyed that.  I used some of my hand dyed cotton, gifted cotton, and Kona cotton.  Simple machine pieced and quilted.

This is the final run for Fiber Artists Coalition.  Our current exhibits are at the Plymouth Arts Center in Plymouth, WI.  This has been a wonderful decade and I have enjoyed the journey.

This week will be the opening of "And Still We Rise" Oct 6 - Dec 30, 2017 at the Columbus Museum, Columbus, GA.  This would not have been possible without the hard work and determination of Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi a "Shero" of the culture.  I am grateful to be included and to be a member of WCQN.  This has been an amazing journey.

Wabi-Sabi:  Finding Beauty in the Imperfect

(Curator’s Statement)

In these days of a throwaway society, it’s good to make do with what we have cherishing the memories they hold.  Wabi-sabi is the Japanese term for finding beauty in the imperfect.  There is beauty in the worn out bench by the garage where you sit on a hot summer day and listen to the grasshoppers chant.  That old tree in the back yard isn’t pretty, but conveys beauty in its strength and character, from making it through the thunderstorm and only losing a limb or starting to rot with moss and lichens growing on its trunk while the woodpeckers search for insects. Look to the natural aging of leaves from bright chartreuse to crumbled brown skeletal remains to understand the meaning of Wabi-Sabi.

The focus of the artists work for this exhibit, “Wabi-Sabi:  Finding Beauty in the Imperfect” gives representation to what satisfies their soul in simple ways.  We engage viewers and invite them to reflect and see in their own lives the imperfect yet simple pleasures of present and past, and the ever-changing life cycle of the natural world around us.

Sun May 21, 2017 1:30 pm at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, founder of the Women of Color Quilters Network and curator of the exhibit And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations, will speak about African American history and its depiction in story quilts. She is recognized as an authority on African American quilts, has authored several books, and is a very sought-after exhibit curator. Her exhibit, which will be at the museum through June 4, 2017, opened at the National Underground Railroad Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2013. The exhibition will travel the United States through the end of this year.

Ubuntutu - update

Greetings All,
Here's an update on "Ubuntutu"  the exhibition has been extended. The show will now go to the Potchefstroom Museum in Potchefstroom, South Africa, and end at Art Scape (the venue where the Desmond Tutu Annual Peace Lecture will be held in Cape Town, South Africa in October). What a blessing to be included. — in Potchefstroom.
