C.T. Gabbert Art Park.

Greetings All,
I drive past the place often to look and see what new images the have on display because I love public art and today I got an offer to be included  in the "C.T. Gabbert Art Park" thanks to Eileen/Doug Leunig and a special thanks to Chuck Gabbert.

"What started as a vacant gas station on the corner of MacArthur Highway and SW Adams is now an artistic oasis, thanks to C.T. Gabbert Remodeling and Construction Inc. The firm is bringing beauty to the south end of the Warehouse District with its art park, featuring a rotating art exhibit, unique and colorful flower planters, a recycled tire and birdhouse hanging display and a “Little Free Library”—a cabinet of books for community exchange. The idea is to take a book and leave a book if you can.

By collaborating with local artists, community members and area schools, mastermind Chuck Gabbert has high hopes for the mural spaces in particular. “These murals can be anything, really. We take an image, photograph or drawing… and turn it into a vinyl piece similar to modern billboard technology.”

Prairie Center of the Arts workshop

Greetings All,
I took a linocut print mini-workshop at the Prairie Center of the Arts and loved it.  I have not done a linocut in ages and it brought back the good and the bad, but I loved every cut.  I even pulled out my Dremel to see if that would make thing move along faster, but haste dose make waste.  However here is the end results and I love it.

"Quilting My Story" with Carolyn Mazloomi, luncheon and lecture, Friday July 15, 2016, 12:30pm. In her formative years, Mazloomi held a fascination with airplanes and she later earned a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. The combination of geometric precision and artistic expression attracted the engineer's interest and quilting became the primary outlet for her creative talent. her desire to tell the African American experience in cloth fueled her exploration in narrative quilts. Consistent with the African American folklore tradition of storytelling, Mazloomi is a "fabric griot". She will discuss her journey from engineering to quilt maker, historian and curator. Here's a weekly  coming to The Quilters Hall of Fame another wonderful honor bestowed on Dr Carolyn Mazloomi.  

A Piece of My Mind: The Narrative Quilts of Carolyn Mazloomi

As a world citizen, this exhibit explores my view of issues and people important to me. I am drawn to vulnerable people – the disenfranchised, dispossessed, outsiders. The injustice and harsh realities of the daily lives of those in need motivate me to create artwork depicting their circumstances. These are people who deserved to be heard, seen and understood, especially women and children. My intention is to invite the viewer into contemplation and raise awareness concerning issues they may be unfamiliar with.  Will be on exhibit July 21 - Oct 1, 2016

I have the privilege of doing my basic landscape workshop and a small exhibit of P.I.E.C.E.S. during the time of celebrations.  For more information about all of the actives check out TQHF website.

The Gifts...

This is a small piece that I created for my granddaughter who just graduated from high school. She had to finish her last year in a new town and in a new school.  She got accepted at Florida Southern College, Loyola University New Orleans, University of Southern Mississippi, Clark Atlanta University, DePaul University in Chicago, University of Tampa, Colorado State, Bradley University
Arizona State University, University of Kentucky, University of New Orleans and Georgia State University.  We are so very proud of her.  Below is part of her journey in her own words.

Good afternoon, this is Mahagony A.K.A. Momo hacking my dad's Facebook page. Just wanted to share with you guys the photos from my shoot 2 days ago. My scholarship team sent me a photographer to shoot me for press release. My goal throughout high school was to just get in college. I surpassed that by getting into 12 universities. My next goal was to attend school for FREE. Lots of people looked at me crazy! I knew it was possible. It can be done, had been done, and will be do...ne. I am not a straight A student. My GPA is a little over a 3.0 I scored a 22, 26, 25, and a 26 again on my ACT (yes, I took the ACT four times me and pops was shooting for a 30). What made me stand out amongst the kids with a 4.0 and 30 on the ACT was my perseverance. I maintained employment throughout my entire senior year (Wendy's, The Fresh Market, currently employed at both Pinkberry and Martins Wine Cellar) still making the honor roll every quarter. I took on 3 Advanced Placement classes thanks to my dad. 2 hours after my interview for $80,000 to attend the University of New Orleans I was awarded the scholarship. To those who said it would be impossible for me to attend school for free in this day and age, I serve a God who does the IMPOSSIBLE. I was not awarded $80,000 based on academics and test scores. As my dad would say "Favor ain't fair."

By the way, it's not bragging if the intention is to INSPIRE (I just made that up y'all might wanna start using that). My team will be awarding me at graduation. I hope they give me one of those big checks like the Publishers Clearing House do. I would love to flex on them kids one last time before I catch my flight back to Chicago 😜
