Visioning Human Rights in the New Millennium - update

Greetings All,

Here's my contribution to the exhibit "Visioning Human Rights in the New Millennium" and I just got my copy of the catalog by the same name written by Dr. Carolyn L. Mazloomi.   My piece was created with commercial cotton, photo transfers, and fiberglass window screen.  This piece measures 50 by 50 and was machine pieced and machine quilted.  I am so very grateful to be included.

Freedom Summer 55

Freedom Summer, also known as the Mississippi Summer Project, was a 1964 voter registration drive sponsored by several civil rights organizations. Aimed at increasing black voter registration in Mississippi, the Freedom Summer workers included black Mississippians and hundreds of out-of-state, volunteers. Two one-week orientation sessions for the volunteers were held during the summer of 1964 in Oxford, Ohio, on the campus of then-Western College for Women (now part of Miami University). In addition to African-American Mississippians, more than 1,000 out-of-state, and mostly white, volunteers were constantly harassed and abused by the state’s white population. The Ku Klux Klan, as well as police, state and local officials, were behind many of the violent attacks, including arson, assaults, false arrest and the murder of three Civil Rights activists — Michael Schwerner, 24, James Chaney, 21, and Andrew Goodman, 20.

I am honored to present an exhibition, We Who Believe In Freedom: Narratives of Survival and Victory, in honor of the 55th anniversary of Freedom Summer. Please join me for the opening reception on April 5th at 6:00PM at the National Freedom Center Museum located at 50 East Freedom Way, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

A hardcover companion book will be released in April 2019 on Amazon.

Yours for Race and Country: Reflection on the Life of Colonel Charles Young.

The exhibition “Yours for Race and Country: Reflections on the Life of Colonel Charles Young” will open at the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center in historic Wilberforce, Ohio on March 16, 2019, curated by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi. 

Col. Charles Young was born into slavery but went on the achieve greatness in the face of racism and oppression. Young was the first African American Colonel in the United States Army, leading the Buffalo Soldiers, a musician, composer, mapmaker, accomplished linguist, first African American Superintendent for the National Park Service and a scholar. Col. Young was a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and took seriously his role as a mentor to his young brothers. The annals of American history are filled with the names of our nation's greatest heroes, yet the name Charles Young is known by remarkably few Americans.

Through the exhibit, Yours for Race and Country: Reflections on the Life of Colonel Charles Young, viewers will experience both the quilts and African American history as avenues toward an expanded understanding of African American culture, exemplary in the life of Col. Charles Young. The exhibition serves to elevate the discussion of those who experience racially charged opposition as citizens, yet triumph to remind America of its promise. The exhibition will tour a select number of museums.  I am so very grateful to be included one more time.  *Quilt made by Sandra Scott, Cambridge, England

ASWR opens September  1 – October 14, 2018, at Two Concurrent Locations: Mariposa Museum & World Culture Center in Peterborough, NH and Canaan Street Meetinghouse in Canaan, NH.  Women Of Color Quilters Network is still on the move.  The more things change, the more some things stay the same lest we forget.

Coming next month and be on the lookout for Human Rights in the New Millennium: Quilting the Worlds's Conscience.  Opening August 17th at the Fitton Center for the Arts in Hamilton, OH. Women of Color Quilters Network on the move and I am glad to be included one more time thanks to Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi curator, historian, author, and shero.  A catalog will be published later this year. 

P.I.E.C.E.S. an exhibition

My next solo exhibit will be at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, IL.  Aug 20 - Sept 14, 2018.  Gallery talk Aug 29th from  Noon to 1p.m.  This piece "Birch Trees Again" was created with my hand dyed and painted fabrics as well as some gifted fabrics. This piece is machine pieced and machine quilted with raw-edge appliques.  Birch trees are a recurring theme in my work and trees are a mainstay.  I am forever grateful for all opportunities large and small to exhibit and a special thanks to Jessica Ott.

The Art of the Passion - update.

The Art of the Passion at St Paul Lutheran Church in Frankfort, IN will be closing on the 7th of April and this is a photo of the Station of the Cross exhibit that closed on the 31st of March, but open again on Easter Sunday.  I love this photo because of the lighting and the shadow of the viewer beholding my piece.  I am so very grateful for the opportunity to be able to participate in this venue once more and again.

Art Of The Passion - exhibit.

My latest piece was created for the exhibit "The Art Of The Passion" for the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Frankfort, IN.  I created a piece that honors the 6th Station of the Cross.  

Station 6: Comfort – A stranger courageously offers comfort to Jesus.
Veronica was so moved by the sight of Jesus’ suffering that she courageously moved out of the crowd to wipe the blood and sweat from His face with a towel. She was rewarded when the image of His face was transferred to the towel.
It is a suffering face, disfigured with wounds, yet it is the only image of Himself that Jesus chose to leave with us.
We can bring healing to the scars that hide the beauty of His grace from the world. We can continue to build upon faith and the visible signs of love and compassion.  (Matthew 25:40)

My piece is simple in its construction because I wanted to mainly focus on the message of comfort and I do hope that I have conveyed that.  I used some of my hand dyed cotton, gifted cotton, and Kona cotton.  Simple machine pieced and quilted.

Commemorating His Purple Reign: A Textural Tribute to Prince

March 15 - June 17, 2018

This special exhibition celebrates the life and art of Prince through vibrant and exciting fiber art.  "These quilts are pulsating, vibrating, and alive with Prince's music," says Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, one of the nation's experts in African American quilting and juror for this exhibit.  My contribution to this exhibit is "Paisley Park Under a Cherry Moon".

Dreaming Bigger in Strange Times via WMG

Greetings All,

Woman Made Gallery (WMG) is proud to present ‘Dreaming Bigger in Strange Times,’ opening on November 11th and running through December 16. The final exhibition during WMG’s 25th Anniversary year, it is the second exhibition at WMG’s new location in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. Juried by Chicago artist and curator, Joyce Owens, the exhibition includes works by 17 artists from diverse backgrounds and working in a variety of styles and media.
